Dermal Fillers

As we age, we have multiple structural changes occurring in our face which results in volume loss. Our skin thins and loses elasticity, dermal collagen degrades, fat shifts in compartments and migrates downward, and there is diminished bone volume.

One way we can combat this loss is with the use of dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are injected into areas where there has been volume loss to subtly and naturally correct. We use only Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in all vertebrates and synthesized by many bacteria. The chemical structure is the same in all species and tissues. Hyaluronic acid is of great importance to the skin, helping maintain volume and elasticity within the skin.

The two most common (HA) filler brands we use are Juvaderm and Restylane. There are several forms of both brands that have different indications. Your provider will select the form best for your skin needs.

Most common areas treated with fillers include:

Nasolabial folds

Marionette Lines

How to prepare for dermal fillers:

  1. The week prior to treatment it is best to avoid aspirin, NSAIDs, fish oil, Vitamin E, flax seed, black cohosh, ginseng, ginkgo, and St. John’s Wort to decrease chance of bruising

  2. It is also best to avoid heavy alcohol consumption the 48 hours prior

  3. Do not wear makeup to your appointment in the area being treated (It is okay if you do, but it will be removed)

  4. As with most aesthetic procedures it is not recommended within 2 weeks of any major event (4 weeks for lips) to allow time for any mild swelling or bruising to diminish
