What is platelet rich plasma?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a substance taken from your blood and then enriched. PRP has shown the ability to restore and repair many types of human tissue, including skin. Platelets are a type of blood cells that stimulate cell repair and reproduction. Plasma is the liquid portion of your blood. Platelet rich plasma, then, is blood that is boosted to contain an increased and enhanced number of platelets.

Some history about PRP

Doctors first used PRP injections to treat injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints, as well as arthritis pain. PRP injections have become a valuable tool in sports medicine to treat injuries and promote post-surgical healing. A key advantage of PRP therapy is that it can reduce the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medicines like opioids. Dermatologists then researched PRP, and discovered that it is extremely effective in healing and restoring damaged skin. At our office in Charleston PRP Skin Resurfacing works by rebuilding and restoring healthy, more youthful levels of collagen and elastin under your skin.

Common skin complaints that can be dramatically improved with PRP include:

  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin redness or hyperpigmentation
  • Volume loss
  • Uneven skin texture or “crepey” skin

Selecting the right provider for your PRP skin resurfacing

Because PRP is derived from your blood, it is considered an exceptionally safe procedure. But the safety and effectiveness of your Charleston PRP Skin Resurfacing treatment can only be maximized when prescribed and administered by highly trained and highly experienced providers, such as our team at Ageless Rx!

The Process

This is achieved by drawing the patient’s blood and processing it in a way that allows the provider to isolate the PRP or platelet rich plasma. The platelets are activated to release potent growth factors that would normally be used to heal injured tissue. These growth factors are injected into the area of concern, which activates multi-potent stem cells to grow new tissue including new collagen, fatty tissue (for smoothness), and new blood vessels (for a healthy glow). Your provider will first numb your treatment areas before using a fine needle to inject your targeted skin locations. When facial skin volume loss is a major concern, PRP injected into the face can also be paired with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, for enhanced results. This is known as a PRP facelift, or colloquially, a “Vampire Facelift.”

Results

You should start to notice results within two or three weeks, primarily in the form of smoother and firmer skin. It may take up to six months to achieve full results and benefits. Results are not permanent and may require regular “touch-up” injections.
