What are hormones?

Hormones are our bodies’ chemical messengers. They are secreted by our endocrine glands directly into our bloodstreams, which then carry them to our organs and tissues to perform specific functions. Women’s major endocrine glands include the pituitary, the pineal, the thymus, the thyroid, the adrenals, the pancreas, and the ovaries. Hormones impact and help regulate our growth and development, our metabolism, our sexual function and reproductive health, and our cognitive functions and moods. Hormone levels naturally decline with age, but that decline is also accelerated by other physiological or lifestyle factors.

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy is medical treatment that restores and balances normal hormone levels. For women, hormone replacement therapy typically is used to replace declining levels of estrogen and progesterone.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is all about optimal health and vitality as we age. A common conception is that hormone replacement is interfering with nature. In part, this is true. We are designed to mature, reproduce, and then steadily decline.

We have, however, been given the knowledge and tools to slow the process of degeneration. We eat healthy, exercise, use sunscreen, take supplements and wear our seatbelts all for the same purpose; to live our best lives for as long as possible. Hormone replacement therapy is completely consistent with that philosophy. There is a continuous symphony of processes in our body that work in a harmonious way. Our bodies, however, change as we age. Additionally, we are being constantly bombarded by stressors that alter this balance in our systems. The environment, our diet, relationships – they all have a stressful impact on our health. Hormones are a vital part of keeping our systems functioning at their best. Bioidentical hormone replacement can restore lost libido and energy in our 40s, eliminate debilitating hot flashes and brain fog and reduce unwanted weight gain that comes with menopause, or simply protect our heart and bones as the years pass.

Benefits of proper hormone balance

At Ageless Rx we use only bioidentical hormones, meaning hormones that are identical on a molecular level with the hormones our bodies naturally produce. We use safe and best practice hormone protocols backed by medical literature to replace and optimize our patients’ hormones using only customized compounded bioidentical hormones. We use combinations of hormone creams, capsules, sublingual lozenges and pellets based on patient preference and lifestyle.

Hormones used in hormone replacement therapy for women

The following are some of the hormones that we evaluate and replenish as necessary in women.

Estrogen

Estrogen is predominately a female hormone produced in the ovaries and the adrenal glands. The female body produces three types of estrogen. Estradiol is the most abundant during the reproductive years. Estrone becomes the most prominent in untreated menopause. Estriol is the byproduct of the other two and has the weakest estrogenic effect.

In addition to the cosmetic benefits – stronger hair, smoother skin, and improved muscle tone, estrogen has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and colon cancer. Additionally, there is protection and reduction of stroke, cholesterol, Alzheimer‘s disease, menopause symptoms, memory loss, genital tract atrophy, and depression. When dosed correctly and properly balanced with Progesterone, Bioidentical Estrogen replacement is extremely safe.

Progesterone

Progesterone gets its name from being the hormone of pregnancy (Pro gestational-hormone). Progesterone is secreted by the corpus luteum in the ovary following ovulation and hence is predominately in the second half of the menstrual cycle in menstruating females. There are receptor sites in the uterus, breast, vagina, blood vessels, and brain.

Additional Reading

One of its primary roles outside of pregnancy is to maintain balance with estrogen. When women reach their 40s, progesterone typically is the first hormone to become deficient because ovulation is occurring less and less frequently. This is what some term estrogen dominance, but truly it is progesterone deficiency. Progesterone’s primary effects include: Improved sleep, mood, and libido, breast and uterine cancer protection, and reduced bloating.

Testosterone

Testosterone, while less talked about in women, is extremely important. In women, testosterone is produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries. This hormone goes beyond controlling sex drive to give the body true vitality. We have seen from medical studies that optimal testosterone can: increase lean muscle mass, endurance, libido, and energy, improve mood and sleep, and decrease aches and pains.

DHEA

DHEA is a hormone secreted by nerve tissue and the adrenal glands. It is an endocrine precursor to other hormones (Testosterone, Progesterone, and Estrogen). This is one of our stress hormones and is a backup to the cortisol production in our bodies. DHEA levels fall with age but maintaining an optimal level helps immune system function, mood, and libido.

Pregnenolone

Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone synthesized from cholesterol and naturally found in the brain, gonads, and adrenal glands. It is the precursor to DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Pregnenolone is an imperative “brain-supporting” hormone that often decreases with age, leading to memory decline, mood changes, stress, and anxiety.

Replenishing Pregnenolone levels can lead to reduced stress, balanced mood, memory function, better sleep, and less anxiety.
