Electrolysis

Electrolysis is safe, effective and has been FDA approved for permanent hair removal

Electrolysis

A small wire sends a pulse of electricity into the follicle stopping it from growing hair in the future. The new electrolysis machines work great with very low levels of discomfort. It feels like a pulse of heat that is over in less than a second. It is a safe technology that can be used on all body areas, skin, and hair types.

We have 3 different hair removal lasers and well as Electrolysis options please book a free consultation to see what could work for you.

"I highly recommend checking out Ageless for anyone seeking exceptional electrolysis services! It’s one of the few places in the Charleston area that offers electrolysis, and even with an hour-long drive, it’s the best deal compared to any option in Georgetown. - Dawn, S"

Facts about Electrolysis

  • Electrolysis is permanent hair removal for everybody, regardless of skin color or hair type.
  • Electrolysis permanently destroys the hair follicle, preventing treated hairs from growing back.
  • Electrolysis treatment involves a licensed professional inserting a very fine prob (usually thinner than the hair being treated) into the opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. A tiny amount of electrical current is then applied to destroy the part of the hair follicle that grows hair.
  • Electrolysis devices can destroy the hair growth cells with chemical energy, heat energy, or both. All are effective and deliver permanent results. The three modalities in current use are Galvanic Electrolysis, Thermolysis, and the Blend.
    • Galvanic
      • A current produces a chemical reaction within the hair follicle, eliminating the hair growth cells.
    • Thermolysis
      • This modality heats and destroys the hair growth cells in the follicle. A higher intensity current can be applied for less time in the follicle, or the current can be used at a lower intensity with longer timing.
    • The Blend
      • The blend method combines galvanic current with thermolysis current. Thermolysis heats up the chemical reaction in the follicle, destroying the hair growth cells.
  • During treatment, you'll probably feel a momentary heat sensation or pinch, but you should not feel the insertion of the probe into the hair follicle, nor should you feel like the hair is being pulled out when it is removed; the hair will usually slide out of the follicle when properly treated.
  • Discomfort is minimal for most people, but individual tolerances vary greatly. Keep in mind that some areas of the body are much less sensitive than others, we do have numbing cream available if you're more on the sensitive side.

Why We offer Electrolysis

My name is Chris Steidinger, and I am one of the practice's founders. My eyesight was great until I turned 40, then suddenly, I started struggling to see things within an arm's reach without squinting, basically age-related presbyopia. So what do I do? I become a river in Egypt and pretend I do not have a problem. I get the biggest monitor possible. I put my phone to the biggest font possible because I'm not getting older, my arms just aren't long enough.

This goes on for too long, a couple of years, and everyone in my life is making fun of me. Finally, I break down, accept reality, and get the glasses. I can see again! Hooray!.... Wait, what's this I see? Is it ear hair? Why has no one told me this? To my absolute horror and disgust, I now have some black hair growing out of my ears. I want to throw up. I'm nauseous, revolted, and I need to get this taken care of immediately. Can you guess what is the only permanent hair removal solution for having a small amount of unwanted hair growing out of your ears? Yep, you guessed it, Electrolysis. I thought it was going to be really painful, and I didn't care. I needed that ear hair G-O-N-E. I was really shocked at how not painful it was and I absolutely loved the results I got. So now we offer it here. Hopefully, you find it as useful as I have, and thank you for considering us for your business. We would love the opportunity to take care of you.

Pros and Cons: Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis

Laser Hair Removal

Pros:

  • Faster treatment times for larger areas (e.g., 20-60 minutes per session).
  • Less painful than electrolysis (feels like a rubber band snap; numbing cream available).
  • Provides long-term reduction (up to 90% hair loss after full course).

Cons:

  • Not fully permanent; touch-ups needed (hair regrowth in 1-2 years).
  • Ineffective on light or gray hair
  • Potential side effects like redness, swelling, or pigmentation changes(if not done properly).
  • Limited to certain skin/hair combinations; sun exposure restrictions pre/post-treatment.

Electrolysis

Pros:

  • Truly permanent results (FDA-approved; no regrowth after completion).
  • Works on all hair colors, types, and skin tones without pigment risks.
  • Precise for small areas; minimal long-term side effects.
  • No restrictions on sun exposure or tanning.

Cons:

  • Depending on the area it could be more time-consuming
  • Could be more painful (we have numbing cream available if you are sensitive to it).
  • Potential temporary redness, swelling, or scabbing; less ideal for large areas.

Laser Hair Removal: Indications for Skin Types and Hair Colors

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target melanin (pigment) in hair follicles, heating and damaging them to inhibit future growth. It's most effective when there's a high contrast between hair color and skin tone.

  • Indicated Skin Types: Best for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick scale types 1-4: very fair to olive skin). The laser can distinguish dark hair from light skin, minimizing risks like burns or pigmentation changes. For darker skin (types 5-6: brown to dark brown/black), specialized lasers (e.g., Nd:YAG) are needed to avoid damaging melanin in the skin, but efficacy may be lower.
  • Indicated Hair Colors: Works best on dark hair (brunette or black) due to high melanin content for laser absorption. Less effective on light hair (blonde, gray, white, red) as there's insufficient pigment to target the follicle.

Laser is often recommended for those with fair skin and coarse, dark hair seeking reduction in larger areas (e.g., legs, back), but multiple sessions are required for semi-permanent results.

Electrolysis: Indications for Skin Types and Hair Colors

Electrolysis involves inserting a fine probe into the hair follicle and applying an electric current to destroy the growth center, making it the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal.

  • Indicated Skin Types: Suitable for all skin tones (Fitzpatrick 1-6), including dark or sensitive skin, as it doesn't rely on melanin and poses minimal risk of pigmentation changes.
  • Indicated Hair Colors: Effective on all hair colors and textures, including light (blonde, gray, white, red) or fine hair, since it targets the follicle directly rather than pigment.

Electrolysis is ideal for small areas or when laser isn't suitable, but it requires multiple sessions for permanence.
