Vibrant, radiant facial skin is the foundation of human attractiveness. But time, stress, sun exposure, and other lifestyle factors can diminish your skin’s youthful smoothness and clarity. At our office serving Charleston & Mt Pleasant Microneedling is one of the specialties for our team at Ageless Medical Spa and Hair Restoration. We invite you to schedule a consultation to learn more about this exciting treatment!

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that refreshes and resurfaces your skin. It employs a form of collagen induction therapy which uses a pen containing fine needles to make tiny pricks in the skin surface. This process triggers the body’s natural wound healing process which encourages the production of new collagen and increases blood flow to the treated area, improving the overall volume, texture, and tone of the skin.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling creates millions of tiny channels in your skin, allowing it to absorb rejuvenating nutrients such as hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a clear, gooey substance that is naturally produced by your body. HA binds with water to help retain dermal moisture. But your natural HA declines over time and can need a boost. When applied through microneedling, HA can repair damaged skin, resulting in softened wrinkles and scars, as well as thicker and plumper skin.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

  • Tighter and smoother skin
  • Reduced pore size
  • Improvement in scarring secondary to acne or trauma
  • Improvement in fine lines and wrinkles

With Microneedling Mt Pleasant patients can help the appearance of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles. It does a great job of smoothing and evening out your skin texture by promoting collagen growth.

Are you a good candidate for microneedling?

You are if you’re in good overall health. Microneedling can treat all skin types. You may be an ideal candidate if you have skin concerns that have not responded to other treatments.

Why is microneedling with the Skinpen Better?

SkinPen® Precision by Crown Aesthetics is the first and only FDA-cleared device clinically proven to improve the appearance of wrinkles of the neck and facial acne scars for people aged 22 and over. Microneedling sessions with SkinPen take about 30 minutes and usually require little downtime.

What is PRP?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an isolate of an individual’s own blood that contains concentrated platelets which when activated, release growth factors. These growth factors are very important in the healing of injuries, in this case, the micro-wounds created by microneedling.

PRP works on a simple premise, utilizing one’s own natural platelets to instruct the body to create new collagen. Microneedling with PRP is a great treatment for patients that want to maximize the body’s natural healing processes to enhance the effects of skin rejuvenation. In this procedure, PRP is applied topically in conjunction with microneedling. This allows the body’s regenerative growth factors to be placed directly within the micro-injuries. Using PRP will enhance the body’s natural healing effect.

Additional Reading

Patients will have enhanced results over Microneedling alone, producing more collagen, and getting tighter, smoother, and better-toned skin. PRP can also be injected into the deep dermis for further enhancement and improvement in volume. This is known as PRP for dermal rejuvenation or PRP Facelift. For more information about PRP, please see the About PRP section.

Your microneedling procedure

Microneedling is an outpatient procedure that is usually performed in your provider’s office. You’ll have a numbing cream smoothed onto your face so you won’t feel the needle pricks. Total prep and treatment time is less than two hours, with our Mt Pleasant Microneedling application itself generally taking about 20 minutes.

What to expect post-procedure

Day 1

The day of the procedure patients will experience redness like a bad sunburn and some sensitivity to the touch. Try not to touch the skin to avoid spreading bacteria from hands to the micro channels created from the microneedles. If Microneedling is performed with PRP, patients will leave with the PRP on the face which will remain until the following morning. No exercise or sun exposure the remainder of the day.

Day 2

On day two, wash the face with Skin Medica SENSITIVE cleanser, or an approved gentle cleanser. Do not use any moisturizer or treatment serums until the evening of day 2. Skin should be bare for 24 hours after the procedure. After 24hrs post-procedure, use Skin Medica Ceremide treatment cream, or another approved post peel cream, along with Skin Medica Essential Defense sunblock or other approved sunblock.

Additional Reading

It is VERY important to protect the skin from the sun with a physical sunblock as the skin will be much more sensitive to UV light and exposure may result in discoloration and hyper-pigmentation. By day two, all or most of the redness should be gone, but skin may still be sensitive to the touch. Some people may experience swelling, usually under the eyes or cheeks. Areas treated more aggressively are more likely to experience prolonged redness and possible swelling. It is safe to wear JANE IREDALE Mineral powder makeup to cover up any residual redness. Any other liquid foundations may cause irritation. Continue to avoid exercise.

Day 3

Most, if not all the redness should be gone. A physical defense sunblock and post treatment cream should continue to be used. Dry flaking skin may start to appear, this is normal. Use Ceremide treatment cream, or other recommended post treatment cream to help heal and hydrate. Light exercise that does not result in sweating may be resumed.

Day 4

Skin should be returning to normal but may still be dry and flaking. About 20% of people experience a post needling breakout that may last 2-5 days with little bumps that will go away on their own. Do not pick at the bumps or they will last longer and you could possibly cause infection of the pore. Continue to be diligent with sunblock. Full exercise may be resumed.

You’ll notice significant improvement after your second treatment, but it will likely take 90 days or so following your last session to realize your final dazzling results!
